Overview

I can do a variety of pages, from straight-forward designs for businesses to more abstract, graphic-intensive pages for your band, movie, or other project.  When building a webpage, I like to focus on a central theme that will join all of the pages together.  I also try to give the visitor a sense of the client's personality.

Being that webpages are an interactive, visual medium, I also like to include a few bells and whistles where I can to bring the user into the page more.  Of course, since accessibility is always a priority, I am careful not to incorporate these accessories in places where they become a nuisance.

John Musco Design

Since this site’s primary function is that of a portfolio, I wanted to give it the feel of a business site, while still remaining visually interesting.  I like the idea of taking an unlikely concept and making it prominent and functional without being distracting.  In the case of this site, I was slightly inspired by the colorful yet orderly layout of the New York City Transit System, which uses a combination of colors and letters to direct passengers to the proper trains.

For my central theme, I chose to color-code each page with unconventional, frosted colors. The pages that feature content use bulleted lists to provide a streamlined visual experience where a person can get a feel for my work without tons of tedious clicking back and forth.  Despite being based on business sites, I also made sure to incorporate various bells and whistles to give the visitor a feel for the different types of interactive features I like to incorporate in all of the sites I create.

Travesty

Travesty is a heavy metal band from Queens, New York.  The band's website is presented in an abstract manner; relying on visual interaction rather than extensive writing.  The central theme of the page revolves around Travesty’s logo - which I also created.  On each page, part of the logo is broken up into a design that either corresponds to the content of the page, outlines information, or assists in navigation.

Since Travesty has already established themselves on various social networking sites such as MySpace, YouTube, and Reverb Nation, the site was in part designed to be a hub that joins all of their fans together.  A few of the pages also incorporate features of these sites through embedded codes.  For example, the primary content featured on “video” page is hosted on YouTube.

Musco Films

Meant as a way of displaying some of the work I had done between 1997 and 2005, Musco Films was the first website that I ever designed.  Inspired by the gritty look of the film “Seven,” the entire site revolves around an image of a desk on the homepage.  Around the desk are various objects that represent links to the "still," " video," "audio," and "about" sections.  The big point of interest for the site is the unconventional practice of cannibalising pictures of real world objects and then converting them into graphical user interfaces. Two good examples of this would be the paperclip navigation menu and the clarinet "links" page.
